Troops Repel ISWAP Assault in Kukawa, Kill Over 25 Terrorists

Operation HADIN KAI says the 101 Special Forces Battalion beat back an attack from four directions in Borno State, with air support turning the fight.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled a coordinated attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Kukawa, Borno State, killing over 25 of them, according to the Nigerian Army.

The terrorists reportedly attacked troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion in large numbers from four directions. With support from the Air Component, the troops fought back and forced the surviving attackers to flee.

Arms recovered, search continues

Preliminary assessment puts the number of terrorists killed at over 25, with 14 bodies recovered so far. Troops also recovered arms and ammunition, including six AK-47 rifles. Clearance operations are ongoing to find more weapons, track the fleeing terrorists and stop them from regrouping.

Soldiers lost in the fight

The Army confirmed that some soldiers died in the encounter and extended condolences to their families. The number of casualties was not disclosed.

What the Army says next

The Army says the outcome shows the growing effectiveness of air-ground cooperation in the North East. It says troops will keep up aggressive patrols, intelligence-led operations and joint actions with sister services and other security agencies to dismantle terrorist networks and protect communities.
