Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has congratulated his former player George Weah, on his election as the new President of Liberia.
Wenger conveyed his congratulatory message in a press statement on Thursday ahead of the game against Watford over the weekend.
Weah who was a former Chelsea and Manchester City player, was also a three-time winner of the African Footballer of the Year prize.
He was crowned World Footballer of the Year in 1995 and became the first African to win the title.
â€œI would like to congratulate one of my former players, who became President of Liberia, George Weahâ€ Wenger said
â€œIt is not often that you have a former player who becomes a president of a country and so well done Georgie and I would say just for him to keep his enthusiasm and his desire to learn and to win,â€ the Arsenal boss added.
The retired proficient footballer turned politician who was a senator in his home country before his emergence as the successor of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. In 2011, he also ran for the vice-president role on the losing ticket.
Other footballers to enter politics include PelÃ© and Zico who have both served as Brazilian sports ministers.
