ANOTHER Obaship supremacy battle has reared its ugly head between the ATAOJA of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi.
Seniority tussle between the First Class monarchs started with a reported statement credited to Ataoja that he should be ranked number 4th in Osun State ranking thereby pushing Oluwo to the 5th position.

In reaction, the Iwo Board of Trustees (IBOT) in a Press Release monitored on Facebook page by SOJ WORLDWIDE, strongly condemned the statement credited to Ataoja as stirring the hornet’s nest.
The IBOT’s statement said Ataoja failed to provide his historical facts to support his claim of seniority.
IBOT cautioned that Osun peace should not be allowed to be jeopardized by what they called avoidable provocations warning that anyone who falsify historical facts should be ready to face its attending Sanctions.
“The Iwo Board of Trustees (IBOT) has strongly condemned the recent statement credited to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Laaroye, describing it as an attempt to “stir the hornet’s nest.”
In a press release signed by Professor Lai Olurode, President of IBOT, and Aare Jire Ayinla, Secretary General, the group faulted the Ataoja’s claim that he should be ranked fourth among first-class Obas in Osun State, thereby pushing the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, to fifth position.
According to IBOT, the Ataoja failed to provide credible historical or archival evidence to back his position. They stressed that while Osogbo has grown politically since becoming Osun’s capital in 1991, its modern administrative relevance cannot erase Yoruba historical facts.
The statement pointed out that the Ataoja’s crown, like some others, was formally recognized only in 1976 by a decree of then Military Governor David Jemibewon, whereas the Oluwo’s beaded crown is of ancient and authentic Odùduwà lineage.
Citing historical records from the old Western Region, IBOT noted that Ataoja was not listed among the beaded crowns at the time, warning against the misuse of political power to distort Yoruba heritage.
While acknowledging the sociopolitical ties between Iwo and Osogbo, IBOT maintained that respect for tradition should not be compromised. They urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to intervene, direct the Ataoja to withdraw the statement, and issue an apology to the Oluwo as well as the Osun State Council of Obas.
“The Oluwo has distinguished himself as a no-nonsense monarch who will never allow history to be distorted. Leaders of thought in Iwo also cannot fold their arms while established historical facts are falsified,” the statement read.
IBOT further cautioned that Osun State’s relative peace must not be jeopardized by avoidable provocations, insisting that anyone who engages in historical falsification should face appropriate sanctions.”
