Child Abuse in Owerri—A disturbing case of child abuse has sparked outrage in Owerri, Imo State, following the arrest and arraignment of a woman accused of inflicting severe injuries on her five-year-old son.

The suspect, identified as Mrs. Juliet Igwe, was recently arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Owerri on charges bordering on grievous harm and attempted murder of her son, Onyinyecchi.

According to reports, the young boy allegedly suffered multiple injuries after being brutally maltreated by his mother. The incident has generated widespread condemnation from child rights advocates, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens across the country.

“No child deserves to go through such pain and suffering, especially from someone entrusted with their care and protection,” a child rights advocate stated.

Furthermore, sources revealed that after allegedly inflicting the injuries, the woman abandoned the child. Fortunately, the boy was rescued before the situation became even more tragic.

The rescue operation was reportedly carried out by the Stand For Humanity Foundation, a humanitarian organization led by activist journalist Chidiebube Okeoma. The foundation provided immediate intervention and ensured the child’s safety while alerting relevant authorities.

Speaking on the development, members of the foundation described the condition of the child at the time of rescue as heartbreaking and unacceptable.

“Every child deserves love, protection, and care. What happened to this little boy is a painful reminder of the need to speak up against child abuse wherever it occurs,” the foundation emphasized.

Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command swiftly intervened in the matter and arrested the suspect. The police subsequently charged her to court, where she was arraigned to answer for the allegations against her.

In addition, child welfare advocates have called for a thorough investigation and diligent prosecution of the case to ensure justice for the victim.

They also urged parents, guardians, neighbors, teachers, and community leaders to remain vigilant and report any signs of child abuse to appropriate authorities.

The case has once again highlighted the growing concern over child abuse and neglect in society. Consequently, stakeholders are calling for stronger enforcement of child protection laws and increased public awareness on children’s rights.

As legal proceedings continue, many Nigerians are hoping that justice will be served and that the young victim will receive the medical care, emotional support, and protection needed to recover from the traumatic experience.

Authorities have assured the public that the matter will be pursued in accordance with the law while ensuring the welfare of the child remains a top priority.
