Dare Bejide vote-buying allegation — The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ekiti State, Chief Dare Bejide, has alleged that a vote-buying incident at his polling unit triggered a confrontation involving party officials, local government authorities, and security personnel during the election.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the incident, Bejide claimed he challenged a woman whom he accused of distributing money to voters near the polling area.

“There were allegations that this lady was distributing money, and I confronted her. She called her boss. The council chairman came here and started abusing me,” Bejide said.

According to the ADC candidate, the situation quickly escalated after he questioned the woman’s activities. He maintained that his intervention was aimed at protecting the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that voters exercised their rights freely.

Furthermore, Bejide alleged that the confrontation attracted the attention of security operatives stationed around the polling unit, creating a tense atmosphere among party supporters and voters.

“We cannot continue to allow vote-buying to undermine democracy. Elections should be decided by the people and not by the highest bidder,” he stated.

Meanwhile, witnesses at the polling unit reported heightened tension as party agents exchanged accusations over alleged electoral misconduct. However, election officials continued their duties while security personnel monitored developments to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The allegation has added to growing concerns about vote-buying and other electoral malpractices that often surface during elections in Nigeria. Civil society organizations and election observers have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of electoral laws to discourage inducement of voters.

In addition, political stakeholders have urged security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to thoroughly investigate all reported incidents and hold anyone found culpable accountable.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official response from the individuals accused in the allegation. Likewise, electoral authorities had not issued a formal statement regarding the incident.

Nevertheless, the development has once again highlighted the persistent challenge of vote-buying in Nigeria’s democratic process, with many observers insisting that credible elections remain essential to strengthening public confidence in governance.
