The Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State, has ordered the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police to suspend the enforcement of tinted glass permits for vehicle owners.
This interim order was issued on October 3, 2025, in response to a suit filed by lawyer John Aikpokpo-Martins challenging the legality of the new tinted permit enforcement policy.
The Nigeria Police Force had announced in April 2025 that it would resume the issuance of tinted glass permits nationwide after suspending the scheme in 2022.
This move sparked public criticism, with motorists expressing concerns about potential harassment and extortion at checkpoints. The Police defended the policy, citing national security concerns and the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act of 1991.

The police are to suspend enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy until the court determines the legality of the policy.
Senior Advocate Kunle Edun described the directive as a significant step in upholding the rule of law.
Many Nigerians have welcomed the court’s decision, citing concerns about potential harassment and extortion by police officers.
