A Historic Milestone

Danjuma hails from Jaba in Kaduna State. Before reaching the Bar, however, he first completed a degree in Common Law at the University of Ilorin, graduating with a second-class upper division. Afterward, he proceeded to the Abuja Campus of the Nigerian Law School, where he completed his Bar Part II programme.

Once the news broke, Danjuma took to X to share his joy. He wrote:

“First Deaf Lawyer from Northern Nigeria. Called to the Bar. History made.”

Indeed, his call to the Bar came during a landmark week for Nigeria’s legal profession. Specifically, the Nigerian Law School admitted thousands of new lawyers during the 2026 Call to Bar ceremonies, held between July 7 and 10 at the Body of Benchers Complex in Abuja. Meanwhile, Israel Adekunle Adeniyi emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student for the same cohort after completing his studies at the Lagos Campus.

From Campus Advocate to National Leader

Beyond the classroom, Danjuma has consistently pushed for disability inclusion. For instance, while studying at the University of Ilorin, he served as the Students’ Union Senator representing students with disabilities. Consequently, he gained early experience advocating for accessibility within Nigeria’s higher education system.

Later, his leadership expanded to the national stage. He served two terms as National President of the National Association of Nigerian Deaf Students. During that time, he organised the association’s first national conference in 2023 and launched the NANDS Magazine. As a result of his contributions, he also received a Long-term Service Award.

Furthermore, his advocacy work reached an international audience. Between 2021 and 2024, he served as a Youth Adviser on Human Development on the European Union Youth Sounding Board in Nigeria. In that role, he advised on education, health, and social protection policies affecting young people across the country.

Building a Career in Disability Law

Today, Danjuma works as Programmes Lead at the Voice of Disability Initiative. There, he coordinates advocacy projects, outreach programmes, and disability inclusion initiatives. According to his professional profile, his interests span disability law and policy, human rights, international law and diplomacy, assistive technology, and employment and labour law.

Altogether, these interests suggest that Danjuma plans to use his legal training to keep advancing disability rights. Given his track record, many colleagues and advocates already expect him to become a leading voice in that space.

An Inspiration for Many

Since the announcement, colleagues and disability rights advocates have praised Danjuma’s achievement. Many have highlighted the challenges he overcame throughout his academic journey to reach this point. Ultimately, his story shows that determination, paired with the right support systems, can break down barriers in even the most demanding professions.

As Nigeria’s legal community welcomes its newest wave of lawyers, Danjuma’s journey stands out as a powerful reminder. Representation matters, and so does perseverance.
