Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 Labour Party vice presidential candidate, has responded to Nasir El-Rufai’s allegations that the government is paying bandits.
Baba-Ahmed believes El-Rufai cannot absolve himself from blame, having been part of the APC since 2013 and one of its architects. Key points from their exchange include.
El-Rufai claimed the Federal Government and Kaduna State Government are paying bandits up to ₦1 billion, describing it as a “kiss-the-bandits” policy driven by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The Federal Government, through ONSA, denied the allegations, calling them “baseless” and stating they’ve consistently warned against paying ransom. The Nigerian Armed Forces also dismissed the claim, explaining their Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) program through Operation Safe Corridor.
Baba-Ahmed thinks El-Rufai’s claims might be true, stating, “I think he is right, the government has been paying them. Insecurity has been the APC’s way of staying in power.”
He criticized ONSA’s dismissal of El-Rufai’s remarks, suggesting El-Rufai should be questioned by the police and courts.
The Kaduna State Government described El-Rufai’s remarks as “calculated, malicious lies” aimed at undermining security efforts and inciting public anger.
Despite backlash, El-Rufai doubled down on his claim, accusing ONSA and the Kaduna government of politicizing security and hinting at corruption through suspicious real estate purchases in Abuja.
