NIGERIA witnessed yet another petrol Tanker explosion on Saturday, January 25, 2025, killing unspecified number of people.
The sad incident occurred at Ugwu Onyeama Federal Highway, causing devastation to vehicles and commuters.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker, which was carrying petrol, lost control and overturned on the hilly road.
The spilled fuel ignited, resulting in an inferno that engulfed the highway and burned several victims beyond recognition.
A tanker driver who witnessed the accident described the scene as harrowing.
“It was a big tragedy this afternoon. A tanker carrying premium motor spirit fell on the hilly road, spilling its content. Sadly, the fuel caught fire, and all the vehicles on the road at the time were consumed in the flames.”
He added, “Over 10 people, including children, have been burnt beyond recognition. Some bodies have already been taken to the morgue. Many others were severely injured and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.”
The explosion caused significant traffic disruptions as the fire spread rapidly.

The second lane of the Ugwu Onyeama Federal Highway was rendered impassable, leaving many motorists stranded.
“I am trapped somewhere in Ngwo,” the eyewitness said. “The fire stretched to the road leading to Agu-abor, making movement impossible.”
Emergency responders and local authorities rushed to the scene to manage the aftermath and assist victims. However, the extent of the casualties has left the area in a state of mourning.
Residents and passersby worked with emergency teams to evacuate the injured to hospitals and transport the deceased to morgues.
A witness recounted, “Some bodies were loaded into pick-up vans and ambulances earlier, while others are still being recovered.”
The tanker explosion has raised concerns about road safety and the transportation of hazardous materials on Nigeria’s highways.
Local authorities are expected to investigate the incident and take steps to prevent similar tragedies.
As of the time of this report, the Enugu State government had not released an official statement on the incident. Efforts to contact the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, for more details were ongoing.
Traffic along Ugwu Onyeama Federal Highway remains heavily restricted, and commuters are advised to avoid the area while cleanup operations continue.
