Kwankwaso alliance with Peter Obi — Former Kano State Governor and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has hinted at a fresh political alliance involving Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi.
Kwankwaso made the statement while speaking on the need for political cooperation between Northern leaders and the South East, drawing historical parallels with alliances formed during Nigeria’s First and Second Republics.
According to him, the proposed partnership is aimed at strengthening national unity and political cooperation across regions.

“Now we’re going back to what Tafawa Balewa and Ahmadu Bello did during their time, and in the Second Republic, what Shehu Shagari and co did with the leadership of the South East. They are our friends, and we want to work together with them,” Kwankwaso said.
The former presidential candidate’s comment has already sparked fresh political conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially regarding a possible alliance between him and Peter Obi.
Political observers believe the development could reshape opposition politics if both camps eventually agree on a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meanwhile, supporters of both leaders have continued to react across social media platforms, with many describing the move as a strategic attempt to build a broader national coalition.
The statement also revived discussions about past political collaborations between Northern political elites and leaders from the South East during the administrations of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and former President Shehu Shagari.
As political alignments gradually begin ahead of the next election cycle, analysts say more negotiations and consultations among opposition figures are likely in the coming months.
