Journalists and Social Media Influencers have been tasked with taking a leading role in combating gender-based violence (GBV) in Osun State.
The call was made at a recent event organized by the Milestone Agenda for Youth Empowerment and Development Initiative at the NUJ Press Centre in Osogbo.
The Assistant Editor, Politics of The Sun Newspapers, Mr. Ismael Omipidan, emphasized the crucial role journalists play in shaping public perception and driving advocacy against GBV. He noted that while government and civil society interventions have been made, GBV cases persist, particularly in public schools.
Omipidan urged media practitioners to adopt zero tolerance toward all forms of abuse and promote awareness and accountability.
Journalists were encouraged to go beyond reportage by holding perpetrators accountable and giving voice to the voiceless.
The importance of channeling technology toward education, advocacy, and responsible communication was stressed, particularly in Osun State, described as a “hyperactive digital state.”
