Mene Ogidi killing – Tension has deepened in Effurun, Delta State, following fresh allegations by relatives of slain 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, who claimed they were attacked while attempting to retrieve his corpse after his controversial killing by police.
Speaking amid rising outrage, a close associate identified as Ojobo alleged that the situation worsened after the fatal shooting, accusing officers of indirectly inciting violence against the victim’s family.
“We were beaten when we went to carry his corpse. Police gave youths machetes to pursue us,” Ojobo said, describing the incident as chaotic and terrifying.
The allegation comes days after Ogidi was shot at close range by a police officer in a viral incident that has triggered nationwide condemnation and renewed debates over extrajudicial killings.
According to multiple reports, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, along the Warri-Sapele Expressway when Ogidi, a delivery agent, was intercepted by police over a package suspected to contain a firearm. 0
Eyewitness accounts revealed that Ogidi was already restrained on the ground, with his hands and legs tied, when the officer allegedly opened fire at point-blank range despite pleas for his life. 1

Meanwhile, human rights group Avocats Sans Frontières France condemned the killing, stating that the act violated both Nigeria’s constitution and international human rights laws. 2
The group emphasized that law enforcement officers are obligated to arrest suspects and allow the judicial system to determine guilt, not execute individuals on the spot.
In response to public outrage, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the arrest of the officer involved and initiated disciplinary proceedings. 3
