Gunmen attack FUTO community — Residents around the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) community in Eziobodo, Imo State, fled for safety on Wednesday night after heavily armed gunmen reportedly stormed the area and opened fire.
Eyewitnesses said the attack caused widespread panic as students, traders, motorists and villagers abandoned the area while gunshots echoed through nearby communities.
Several videos circulating online showed frightened residents running for cover while some injured victims reportedly received emergency treatment.
An eyewitness, who spoke under anonymity, described the incident as terrifying.
“People were shouting and running in different directions. We heard several gunshots and everywhere became chaotic within minutes,” the resident said.
Another resident alleged that the attackers attempted to abduct some people before security operatives and local vigilantes intervened.
“The gunmen tried to seize some victims along the road, but local security men and community youths resisted them,” the source added.
Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command denied reports claiming that Fulani herders invaded the university community.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Henry Okoye, said security agencies had already launched investigations into the incident.
“The command wishes to clarify that the incident was a criminal attack and not an invasion by Fulani herdsmen as being speculated in some quarters,” Okoye stated.
He further explained that the attackers met resistance from police operatives, local vigilantes and community members during the attempted operation.
Consequently, security presence has increased around the FUTO community and adjoining roads to prevent further attacks and restore calm.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not confirmed casualties or arrests connected to the incident.
Nevertheless, fear continues to spread among residents and students following the late-night attack.
The incident has also triggered reactions on social media, with many Nigerians demanding stronger security measures around tertiary institutions and host communities.
Security agencies urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and report suspicious movements to the nearest authorities.
