A Nigerian dental therapist, DTH Damilola Esan-Williams has raised an alarm over a silent but serious threat to oral health.
According to DTH Damilola Esan-Williams, the continued use of old and frayed toothbrushes could be putting millions at risk of gum disease, bacterial infections, and even tooth decay.
Speaking during a public health awareness campaign, DTH Damilola Esan-Williams emphasized that many people underestimate the dangers of using toothbrushes past their recommended lifespan.
“Using a toothbrush for too long can have serious consequences for your oral health,” she said.
“When bristles become frayed, they not only lose their effectiveness in cleaning teeth but can also damage the gums and harbor harmful bacteria.”
She explained that worn-out toothbrushes provide a breeding ground for bacteria, which can contribute to oral infections, gum disease, and other dental complications, stressed that the importance of timely replacement and proper storage of toothbrushes as part of preventive oral care.
DTH Damilola Esan-Williams however recommend changing toothbrushes every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become visibly frayed.
