TWO popular paramount Yoruba Obas have recently joined their ancestors within 24 hours, the Oniroko of Iroko, Oba Sunmaila Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola (Kurunloju 1) at Iroko Community in Akinyele Local Government of Oyo State died on Friday, May 30, 2025.

 

While another paramount ruler, the Olu of Epe Kingdom, Lagos State, Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale, has been confirmed dead. The revered monarch reportedly joined his ancestors in the early hours of Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the age of 86.

 

According to a public announcement by the Office of the Oniroko of Iroko, the monarch was a symbol of unity, tradition, and progress who devoted his life to serving his people, preserving customs, and pursuing development in Iroko, Akinyele Local Government, and Oyo State in general.

The announcement signed by Prince Dolapo Abioye on behalf of the Opeola-Oniroko Family of the late monarch noted that his body was laid to rest by 10:00 am on Saturday, May 31, 2025.

 

Further programs will be announced by the family in consultation with relevant authorities at the appropriate time.

The statement reads: “It is with a deep sense of sorrow and profound respect that I write to formally announce the passing of His Royal Highness, Oba Sunmaiła Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola (Kurunloju 1), the Oniroko of Iroko, who joined his ancestors in the early hours of Friday, May 30, 2025.

“During his reign, His Royal Highness was a symbol of unity, tradition, and progress.

He devoted his life to the service of his people, the preservation of our customs, and the pursuit of development in Iroko, Akinyele Local Government, and Oyo State in general.

 

“Arrangements are currently being made by the family to lay his body to eternal rest by 10:00 am tomorrow, Saturday, May 31, 2025, Insha Allah.

 

“All other programmes to ensure a befitting commemoration of his life and service will be announced by the family, in consultation with relevant authorities, at the appropriate time.

In another development, it was reported that the Olu of Epe Kingdom, Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale, reportedly passed away in the early hours of Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the age of 86.

SOJ WORLDWIDE gathered that the late Oba, who was the 19th ruler of the Epe Kingdom was laid to rest today according to Islamic rites same day.

 

High Chief Odedeogboro Balogun of Epe Kingdom, Musiliu Adeniyi, confirmed the monarch’s passing on Saturday.

The news is true. It was this morning. He will be buried 4 o’clock today,” Adeniyi said.

 

Before ascending the throne, Oba Adewale held several prominent traditional titles. He first served as the Otun-Balogun, the third-highest chieftaincy title in Epe, and was later elevated to the position of Balogun before being crowned Olu of Epe.

Outside his royal duties, the late monarch had a distinguished career in public service.

He retired as a Director of Administration in the Ministry of Education and also served as Executive Secretary at the Ministry of Lands.”
