The best car insurance companies in 2026 depend on whether you value claims service, price or special perks. Erie Insurance and Amica lead many customer satisfaction rankings. USAA tops lists for military families, while Travelers often has the lowest rates. Prices also keep rising. According to The Zebra, as reported by CNBC Select, premiums rose 18 per cent from 2025 to 2026, to an average of $191 a month.
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study found overall satisfaction steady, with satisfaction on price up slightly. Erie ranked first in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and North Central regions. State Farm led in the Northwest, and Wawanesa led in California. Meanwhile, Nationwide ranked first among usage-based insurers for the third year running.

In contrast, Erie and NJM score high for service but sell only in some states or regions. USAA serves only military families.
To choose well, get quotes from at least three insurers for the same coverage levels. Check each company’s AM Best financial rating and its complaint record with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. In addition, ask about discounts for bundling, safe driving and usage-based programs. Your age, driving record, car and location all affect the final price.
