FCT teachers end strike – Thousands of pupils and parents across the Federal Capital Territory can now breathe easier. Public school teachers have suspended their strike and returned to classrooms.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory chapter, announced the decision after the FCT Administration met key demands. The union reached the decision during an emergency meeting in Gwagwalada on Sunday.

The Chairman of the FCT NUT, Abdullahi Shafa, confirmed the development at a press conference. He directed teachers in primary and secondary schools to resume work immediately.

> “All affected teachers are to return to their duty posts on Monday, April 27, 2026, following the commitments made by the FCT Administration,” Shafa said.

The strike began on April 20. It disrupted academic activities in public schools across Abuja. Teachers withdrew their services over welfare concerns, unpaid entitlements, and delayed career progression.

The intervention of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, helped to resolve the dispute.

According to the union, the minister approved the release of ₦2 billion monthly from the FCT’s Internally Generated Revenue. He also approved an additional ₦3 billion from the 10 per cent Internally Generated Revenue allocation to the six area councils.

The government will use these funds to implement the long-awaited 40 per cent peculiar allowance. It will also clear outstanding benefits owed to primary school teachers.

> “The minister also pledged to address all pending promotion issues and review the 2024 promotion exercise,” Shafa added.

The government also assured teachers that it would not victimise anyone for joining the strike. This assurance formed one of the union’s key conditions for suspending the industrial action.

The union welcomed the development. However, it said it would closely monitor the implementation of all promises. It warned that any failure to honour the agreement could lead to further action.

The NUT also praised teachers for their solidarity, patience, and resilience throughout the strike.

The suspension of the strike will restore normal academic activities in public schools across the FCT. It will also bring relief to students preparing for examinations and to concerned parents.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the resolution. They described it as a major step toward improving teachers’ welfare and strengthening public education in the nation’s capital.

Classrooms will now come alive again as teachers return to work and students resume learning.

Keyphrase: FCT teachers end strike.
