Oshiomhole blasts Akpabio over NNPCL controversy — Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has defended his controversial remarks about the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), insisting that he acted under provocation and in the interest of Nigerians.
Oshiomhole made the declaration while reacting to the Senate’s rebuke following his comments during a recent Public Accounts Committee hearing, where he allegedly described the NNPCL as a “bunch of criminals and thieves.”
The outspoken senator maintained that he stood alone in confronting what he described as corruption and mismanagement within the nation’s oil sector.

“I stand alone to say no to corruption. I acted under provocation to defend all of us,” Oshiomhole stated.
Furthermore, he accused some of his colleagues in the Senate of ganging up against him for speaking openly about issues affecting the country’s oil industry.
According to him, Nigerians expect elected representatives to hold public institutions accountable rather than remain silent in the face of allegations involving public funds.
The controversy erupted after the Senate distanced itself from comments made during the heated hearing on audit queries involving the NNPCL. Senate President Godswill Akpabio subsequently cautioned lawmakers against making statements capable of prejudicing ongoing investigations.
However, Oshiomhole insisted that his comments reflected the frustration of millions of Nigerians who continue to demand transparency and accountability in the management of the country’s petroleum resources.
“When questions are raised about trillions of naira belonging to Nigerians, nobody should expect us to keep quiet. Our duty is to ask questions and seek answers,” he said.
Meanwhile, the disagreement has generated widespread reactions across the political landscape, with supporters praising Oshiomhole for speaking boldly, while critics argue that lawmakers should exercise restraint and allow investigative processes to run their course.
Political observers believe the latest confrontation may deepen divisions within the Senate as scrutiny of the NNPCL’s financial records continues.
Nevertheless, Oshiomhole remains defiant, insisting that he will continue to speak out whenever he believes public interest is at stake.
“I have no regrets. My loyalty is to the Nigerian people, and I will always stand against corruption wherever I see it,” he added.
The NNPCL controversy continues to dominate public discourse, with many Nigerians closely monitoring developments surrounding the ongoing investigations and audit queries involving the state-owned oil company.
