What Today’s Dollar to Naira Rate Means
The gap between the two markets is about ₦44 per dollar today. The black market buy rate is ₦1,375, while the official rate is ₦1,331.33. On 24 September, the gap was about ₦47. Therefore, the difference has narrowed slightly.
The naira has also gained over the past month. One tracker shows the dollar sell rate falling from ₦1,405 on 2 September to ₦1,382 now. That is a drop of about 1.6 percent.
Why the Black Market Rate Is Higher
The black market rate is higher because demand for dollars is greater than supply. Many people cannot get dollars from banks at the official rate. For example, students, traders and travellers often turn to street dealers instead.
In addition, the parallel market sets its rates freely. Dealers change prices based on demand during the day. Meanwhile, the CBN updates its official rates once each business day.
