Ogwashi-Uku tragedy — A tragic incident reportedly claimed the lives of a police officer and a young man earlier today in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, after both individuals fell into a water-filled pit during a chase.

According to eyewitness accounts circulating on social media, the unidentified young man was allegedly being pursued by the police officer when he accidentally slipped and fell into the deep water-filled pit.

Sadly, the police officer reportedly jumped or also fell into the same pit during the pursuit, leading to a heartbreaking double tragedy.

Residents around the area quickly gathered and attempted to rescue both victims. However, eyewitnesses said rescue efforts came too late as the two individuals were eventually pulled out lifeless.

“Earlier today in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, a young man was being chased by a police officer when he accidentally fell into a water-filled pit. In the process of the chase, the police officer also fell into the same pit, and both of them reportedly lost their lives. They were eventually brought out but it was already too late,” an eyewitness narrated.

The shocking development has sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing sadness over the unfortunate loss of lives. Others also called for improved safety measures around abandoned or uncovered pits, especially during the rainy season.

Meanwhile, authorities are yet to officially release statements regarding the incident as of the time of filing this report.
