Hunters round up Fulani bandits OKA AKOKO, ONDO STATE – Tension gripped Oka Akoko in Ondo State after local hunters reportedly rounded up suspected Fulani bandits said to be operating within the area with AK-47 rifles.
According to reports circulating on social media, the hunters intercepted the suspects during a coordinated operation. Witnesses claimed that residents quickly gathered at the scene, while efforts were made to prevent sensitive details of the operation from spreading.
Sources within the community alleged that the bandits suddenly became unable to move with their motorcycles after the intervention of traditional hunters led by the Oluode.
Residents further claimed that the Oluode invoked a traditional Ofo incantation, which allegedly paralysed the suspects’ movements and disrupted their activities.
“The hunters acted swiftly. The suspects were reportedly armed, but they could no longer operate freely after the traditional rites were performed,” a community source said.
Although authorities have yet to officially confirm the circumstances surrounding the incident, the development has generated widespread reactions across Ondo State and beyond.
Meanwhile, many residents praised the hunters for their courage. Others called for stronger collaboration between local vigilante groups and security agencies to tackle rising insecurity in rural communities.
The incident has also revived discussions about the historical role of community self-defence groups in the South-West.
Observers noted similarities with the spirit of the famous Agbekoya movement, which symbolised resistance, communal protection, and grassroots mobilisation during challenging times.
“Our communities must remain vigilant. Security is everyone’s responsibility, and local intelligence remains a powerful tool against criminal activities,” another resident stated.
Furthermore, community leaders urged residents to continue supporting lawful security efforts while allowing security agencies to conduct proper investigations.
As of the time of filing this report, officials of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies had not released an official statement regarding the identities of the suspects or the weapons allegedly recovered.
More details are expected to emerge as investigations continue.
