OSUN State Amotekun Corps operative allegedly shot a follower of Orogun Meji masquerade, identified only as Olubukola dead during a traditional procession in Ikirun, Osun State.

 

The incident occurred on Monday, May 6, 2025, as part of preparations for the Egungun Festival, which was scheduled to commence the following day.

 

The procession, involving numerous followers of the masquerade, was taking place across parts of the town.

 

Eyewitnesses told The PUNCH that Olubukola, a truck driver affiliated with the Eko-Ende Tipper Motor Park, was part of the group accompanying the masquerade during the evening parade when a scuffle erupted.

According to accounts, the Amotekun operative involved had been contracted by the Orogun Meji masquerade group to provide security for the event. Tensions rose when individuals allegedly attempted to seize the operative’s rifle.

 

“In the course of the parade, there was chaos. Some people tried to drag the rifle from the Amotekun officer, and in the confusion, Olubukola was shot in the leg.”

The eyewitness added: “We rushed him to a nearby hospital after the shooting, but sadly, he passed away in the early hours of Tuesday despite medical efforts.”

Further details suggest the shooting may have been accidental, occurring during the struggle involving the firearm.

 

However, this has not been officially confirmed by the authorities.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, SP Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed that investigations are ongoing.

 

“The head of the Orogun Meji masquerade group has been invited for questioning,” he said.

 

SP Ojelabi continued: “We understand the Amotekun officer was engaged by the masquerade group. Our investigation will determine the exact sequence of events and who may be culpable.”
