Turkey Interpol arrest warrant for Netanyahu — Turkey has formally requested an international arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Specifically, the request stems from a domestic criminal case tied to Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy that attempted to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced the move on Friday, escalating tensions between Ankara and Tel Aviv even further.
According to Gurlek, Istanbul’s 11th High Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and another Israeli official, identified as Afek Moskovitch, back on July 14, 2026. Consequently, the Justice Ministry has now asked the Interior Ministry to pursue an Interpol Red Notice against both men. As Gurlek explained on X,
“Our justice ministry has requested that the interior ministry issue [Interpol] red notices for them so that they may be sought internationally.”
Meanwhile, the case centres on events from May, when Israeli forces intercepted vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters. In total, around 50 vessels had set sail from Turkey, carrying roughly 430 activists attempting to break Israel’s naval blockade and deliver aid to Gaza. Subsequently, Israeli forces boarded the vessels, detained the activists, and later transferred them to Israeli custody before eventual deportation.
As a result, Turkish prosecutors have charged Netanyahu and Moskovitch with a lengthy list of offences. These include crimes against humanity, genocide, aggravated deprivation of liberty, intentional injury, torture, property damage, aggravated looting, and hijacking transportation vehicles. Notably, the case forms part of a broader indictment involving 35 defendants in total, all connected to the flotilla operation.
Furthermore, Gurlek made clear that Turkey intends to keep pressing the matter internationally. Indeed, he stated firmly,
“We will not allow the crimes committed in Gaza to be covered up and the perpetrators to be shielded by impunity.”
Overall, his comments reflect Ankara’s long-standing position, since Turkey has consistently criticised Israel’s conduct in Gaza and repeatedly called for international accountability measures.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s office responded sharply to the announcement. In a statement, his office described Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as an “anti-Semitic dictator” and vowed to act forcefully against what it called Turkey’s attempts to destabilise the region. Therefore, this latest legal move has quickly reignited a bitter diplomatic exchange between the two governments.
However, it is worth noting that an Interpol Red Notice does not function as an international arrest warrant in the strictest legal sense. Instead, it serves as a request to police forces worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest an individual pending possible extradition. Additionally, Interpol’s General Secretariat still needs to review Turkey’s request before deciding whether to issue the notice, and the organisation has not yet confirmed any decision.
Even so, the request carries diplomatic weight. For instance, Turkey previously issued domestic arrest warrants against Netanyahu over the broader Gaza conflict, and this latest step builds directly on that existing legal groundwork. In addition, other countries, including France, Italy, and Australia, have separately launched judicial proceedings connected to the flotilla incident, signalling wider international scrutiny beyond Turkey alone.
Moreover, this development also arrives amid fresh regional tensions. Just days earlier, for example, Turkey condemned Israeli airstrikes near Syria’s Abu al-Duhur airbase, an area where Turkish forces reportedly maintain a presence. Consequently, relations between the two NATO-adjacent regional powers appear increasingly strained on multiple fronts simultaneously.
For now, it remains unclear whether Interpol will grant Turkey’s request. Ultimately, Sojworldnews will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as Interpol responds and as diplomatic reactions continue unfolding between Ankara and Tel Aviv.
