Woman escapes death as car plunges into Osun River in Osogbo

An unidentified woman narrowly escaped death on Saturday as shewas rescued alive when her car veered off-road into the Osun River along Gbongan Road Aregbe area in Osogbo, the State capital.

According to The Punch, a commercial minibus driver, Akeem Olaoye, who was driving behind the vehicle involved in the accident, in a chat with Sunday PUNCH, said the car was driving towards Aregbesola Area when she suddenly veered off the road and fell into the river.

Olatoye, however, said some people near the scene immediately jumped into the river and brought out the woman alive.

He said, “I was driving behind the woman. It happened some minutes to 12pm. She was heading towards Aregbesola Area, and the vehicle was about to get to Gbodofon bridge when it suddenly veered off the road. People around were scared.

“The vehicle fell into the river. It had just one occupant, a woman who was the driver. Shortly after the incident happened, some people around that could swim jumped into the river. The woman was rescued alive and taken to a hospital in Osogbo.”

When our correspondent arrived at the scene at about 1pm, the vehicle driven by the woman was still inside the river, while a motley crowd was also noted discussing the incident.

Also at the scene were some officials of the State Fire Service who had come around with a truck for the rescue operation.

In a chat with our correspondent, the Public Relations Officer of Osun State Fire Service, Ibrahim Adekunle, said the victim was rescued alive and had been taken to a hospital for treatment.

According to him, the woman had “left a mechanic workshop in Gbodofon Area some minutes earlier and headed towards Ogo-Oluwa Area but later turned in front of APC Secretariat and moved towards Aregbesola Area.

“Few meters away from Gbodofon, the driver, a woman lost control and the car fell into the river. She was, however, rescued alive by some locals and taken to a hospital.”
