AMAC staff shot dead Abuja – A tragic incident has plunged the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) into mourning after gunmen shot dead one of its staff members, Oladipupo Akinola, during an enforcement operation at NITEL Junction in Wuse 2, Abuja.

The incident occurred on Friday, April 24, 2026, and has sparked outrage across the Federal Capital Territory. It has also raised fresh concerns about the safety of local government enforcement officers.

Akinola joined an AMAC enforcement team carrying out routine duties related to mobile advertising regulation and revenue collection when the attack happened. Eyewitnesses said an argument broke out at the busy junction before the assailants opened fire.

“We heard shouting, and within seconds, gunshots filled the air. People started running in different directions. It was terrifying,” an eyewitness recounted.

Gunmen reportedly shot two AMAC officials during the confrontation. One officer escaped with injuries, but Akinola died at the scene before medical personnel arrived.

“He was still lying there when people gathered around. Everyone was shocked. Nobody expected such violence in broad daylight,” another witness said.

Videos from the scene showed shocked residents gathering around Akinola’s body moments after the shooting. The footage quickly spread across social media and triggered widespread condemnation.

AMAC condemned the killing and described it as brutal, senseless, and unacceptable. The council confirmed that Akinola worked with its mobile advertisement consultant and was performing his lawful duties when the attackers struck.

“This was a senseless attack on a man who was simply carrying out his lawful duties. We condemn this act in the strongest possible terms,” an AMAC official stated.

“Investigation is ongoing. His corpse was deposited at the Wuse District Hospital mortuary by the police. He was working with AMAC’s mobile advert consultant,” AMAC spokesperson, Kingsley Madaki, said.

Police officers moved Akinola’s body to the Wuse District Hospital mortuary shortly after the incident.

Although authorities have not released the full details, reports suggest that the shooting followed a confrontation during the enforcement exercise. Officials have not yet identified the gunmen publicly.

Security agencies have launched an investigation into the killing. However, they have not announced any arrests as of the time of filing this report.

“We will ensure that those behind this tragic incident face the full weight of the law,” a security source familiar with the investigation said.

The incident has reignited public debate over the risks AMAC enforcement officers face during field operations. Many residents have called for stronger protection for officials carrying out lawful assignments.

“Our officers deserve protection while serving the public. No one should lose their life while performing official duties,” a concerned resident said.

Stakeholders have also urged the police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation. They want authorities to arrest and prosecute everyone involved in the attack.

AMAC extended its condolences to Akinola’s family, friends, and colleagues. The council also pledged to cooperate fully with security agencies to ensure justice.

“We stand with the family of our fallen colleague during this painful time. We will pursue justice and support every effort to bring the perpetrators to book,” the council said.

This tragic killing highlights the growing dangers public officers face while enforcing regulations in Nigeria’s capital city.

Police authorities in the Federal Capital Territory are expected to release an official statement as investigations continue.
