Effurun extrajudicial killing – Fresh outrage has erupted in Delta State following the alleged extrajudicial killing of a yet-to-be-identified young man in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on Monday, has sparked widespread condemnation from civil society groups, residents, and human rights advocates, who are demanding a transparent investigation and justice for the victim.

Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu raised the alarm, alleging that a police officer identified as Usman Nuhu, attached to the Area Command in Effurun, was directly involved in the fatal incident alongside other officers.

According to Gwamnishu, the victim was brutally killed under circumstances that have raised serious concerns about police conduct and the continued use of excessive force by some operatives.

โ€œThere are strong indications of an ongoing cover-up. It is important that all responsible parties are identified and held accountable to ensure justice is served and to put an end to extrajudicial killings,โ€ Gwamnishu stated.

Effurun extrajudicial killing: Officer Previously Accused of Misconduct

Sources familiar with the matter say Usman Nuhu is not new to controversy. He was previously attached to the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), and later the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), where multiple allegations of brutality and extrajudicial actions were reportedly made against him.

He also served at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Illah, Delta State. However, reports indicate that he was transferred following repeated allegations of misconduct, including excessive use of force and unprofessional conduct while on duty.

The latest allegation has revived concerns over the redeployment of officers previously accused of rights abuses, rather than subjecting them to thorough disciplinary processes.

Effurun extrajudicial killing: Officer in Custody, Questions Remain

Although Usman Nuhu is reportedly in police custody, activists insist that he did not act alone.

Concerns have intensified over reports that other officers allegedly involved in the incident have not been publicly identified or detained. This has fueled accusations of an internal cover-up aimed at shielding those who may have participated in or facilitated the alleged killing.

Rights groups argue that holding only one officer accountable would fall short of justice if others played active roles in the operation.

Renewed Concerns Over Police Brutality

The incident has once again drawn attention to the persistent problem of extrajudicial killings and police brutality in Nigeria, despite repeated promises of reform following the #EndSARS protests.

Many Nigerians have continued to express frustration over what they describe as a pattern of abuse, impunity, and lack of accountability within some units of the Nigeria Police Force.

Analysts say meaningful reform will require not only disciplinary action against erring officers but also systemic changes in recruitment, training, oversight, and accountability mechanisms.

Demand for Independent Investigation

Civil society organisations and community leaders are now calling on the Delta State Police Command, the Nigeria Police Force headquarters, and relevant oversight agencies to launch an independent and transparent investigation into the incident.

They are also urging authorities to:

  • Identify the deceased and notify his family.
  • Reveal the identities of all officers involved.
  • Ensure a thorough forensic and judicial review of the case.
  • Prosecute anyone found culpable under the law.

A Test of Accountability

This case is likely to become a major test of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to accountability and human rights protection.

For many observers, the outcome will signal whether authorities are truly prepared to confront police impunity or merely continue a cycle of internal protection and public outrage.

As investigations continue, Nigerians await official statements from the Delta State Police Command regarding the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death and the status of all officers allegedly involved.

The demand remains clear: justice must not only be done, it must also be seen to be done.
