Former Kaduna State governor,
Nasir El-Rufai,
has raised a fresh alarm over what he described as a coordinated attempt to tarnish his reputation and implicate him in serious criminal activities.
In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday through his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai firmly rejected allegations linking him to an alleged attack on a prosecution witness. He described the claims as false and politically motivated.
“These allegations are completely false, malicious, and part of a deliberate plot to smear my name and mislead the public,” El-Rufai said.

The controversy began after a media report claimed that unidentified gunmen attacked the residence of a key witness involved in an ongoing case at a Kaduna State High Court. The report suggested a possible link between the attack and the witness’s role in a case allegedly connected to El-Rufai.
However, the former governor dismissed the report. He insisted that it was designed to create a false narrative and damage his public image.
“Any objective observer can see that this story was crafted to falsely connect me to criminal conduct and undermine my integrity,” he added.
Claims of a Coordinated Campaign
El-Rufai further alleged that the incident is part of a broader and sustained campaign against him. According to him, the alleged plot dates back to 2023 and has intensified in recent months.
He recalled previous incidents, including attempts to arrest him shortly after his return to Nigeria earlier this year. He also referenced his detention following an invitation by the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
and subsequent transfer to the
Independent Corrupt Practices Commission.
“There is a clear pattern of harassment, intimidation, and unlawful actions aimed at keeping me under pressure and weakening my legal position,” he stated.
Legal Action Looms
In response to the allegations, El-Rufai disclosed that he has instructed his legal team to initiate defamation proceedings against those responsible for publishing and spreading the claims.
He maintained that he has no connection whatsoever to the alleged attack and warned against the misuse of legal institutions for political purposes.
“I will not hesitate to seek redress through the courts. No one should be allowed to weaponize falsehoods to destroy reputations,” he declared.
Political Implications
Observers believe the situation could have wider political implications. El-Rufai remains a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. Therefore, any controversy surrounding him is likely to attract national attention.
