IT was a sad end for Professor Joseph Olugbuyiro after he was reportedly sacked by the management of the Covenant University in September 2024 after many years of meritorious service.

According to his friend and colleague, Samuel Tuesday Owoeye, Prof Olugbuyiro could not survive the shock of the Termination of his Appointment and the three weeks given to vacate their official residence.

Owoeye said the shocking aspect of their ordeal was when the varsity management refused to pay their terminal benefits until his friend died on May 4, 2025 after their long discussions about their predicaments.

Huummmmm, my brother and colleague, you couldn’t survive the shock. Covenant terminated our appointment with immediate effect in September 2024 and gave us 3 weeks to vacate our residence, failure which we would be forcefully ejected.

Not because we violated any regulations, but there was need to bring down the wage bill and few had to go.

That wasn’t even bad as every employer has the right to hire and fire. The shock came when months after months, Covenant has WICKEDLY refused to pay us our terminal benefit.

As I make this post, they are still devising how to cut, cut, cut and cut from the entitlement we worked for. It is now over 8 months and the organization we spent almost half of our lifetime to serve doesn’t care if we go and die.

Of course, you have gone and you have now died untimely. Hummmmm, the Word of God captures it properly in Jeremiah 17:9: The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it.

My brother and colleague, we spoke last on May 4, 2025 for 7 minutes and 41 seconds and we both shared our individual experiences in the face of the present economy in Nigeria. We didn’t know that death was already knocking. Rest in the bosom of our Lord Professor Joseph Olugbuyiro.

May the Holy Spirit comfort and help everyone you left behind. I am sure Covenant will now call your next of kin and pay him/her what they like and not what you are entitled to receive. God will judge the wicked!”

Elu Omo Elu who must have been a friend of the late Professor lamented the harrowing hardship lecturers are passing, not only in Nigeria but across the globe.

Elu Omo Elu Wrote This:

Sad.. You will assume after PhD and lecturing life, things will be smooth but sadly it’s not always so. Lecturers struggle too after all years of reading and sacrifice due to poor payment and denial of benefits at times.

I remember Ajimobi LAUTECH lecturers brohaha, many started begging friends to eat, the Unilorin 49 too, a professor became a taxi driver.

And it’s not only peculiar to Nigeria.. In some developed countries, their appointments are on contract based. I always read on Quora and reddit how academics complain in US and UK..

Currently in UK Universities, there is an ongoing mass retrenchment in some universities, because the Universities are broke.

The message this is all passing to all of us is how some careers are more of sacrifice but little reward. God bless all our lecturers.. May the gentle soul of Prof Olugbuyiro continue to rest in perfect peace.

I expect covenant University to do better to pay their retrenched old staff their entitlements even if you don’t need their service again. In the end, money is important.”
