The Red Devils were knocked out of the FA Cup by Chris Wilder’s side on penalties after Elanga’s spot-kick miss gave Boro an 8-7 shootout victory, following a 1-1 draw in regulated time.

Looking dejected after his miss, Elanga was quickly swarmed on by United team-mates as well as Ronaldo, who seemed to offer the youngster some advice.

Ronaldo missed a spot-kick of his own earlier in the game when the score was 0-0, but smashed home his penalty in the shootout.

Elanga was the 16th taker after every single Man United and Middlesbrough player buried their penalty’s in the back of the net.

The Swedish teen was Ralf Rangnick’s eighth penalty taker, meaning it had come down to players who do not initially put themselves forward.

Ralf Rangnick and Bruno Fernandes were pictured consoling Elanga after the crucial moment and he will need the team to rally around him now.

The miss will come as a real blow to the 19-year-old, who has recently made a name for himself in the first-team with impressive performances in their Premier League games.

The Swede scored his first league goal in United’s 3-1 away win against Brentford last month and has featured in every game since.
