OOU hostel attack – Students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, are still counting their losses after a frightening midnight attack by suspected armed robbers.

The attackers stormed private hostels near the university late on Friday night. They injured several students and stole valuables, including phones, laptops, and cash.

The incident happened in off-campus hostels occupied by students. It sent many residents running for safety. Witnesses said the gunmen moved from room to room during the raid.

They forced students to hand over their belongings. Some students who resisted were beaten and injured.

“They came in around midnight. Everyone was terrified. We heard shouting and gunshots. Some students were beaten badly, while others lost everything they had,” a student told SOJ WORLDWIDE.

Another student described the attack as one of the most terrifying experiences of his life.

“We hid wherever we could. Some of us stayed under our beds. We were helpless. It felt like a nightmare,” he said.

The attack has triggered fresh concerns about the safety of students living off campus. Many students say insecurity in the university community has become a growing problem.

They are now calling on the Ogun State Government, university management, and security agencies to act quickly.

“We cannot continue to live in fear. Students deserve a safe environment to study and live. This situation needs urgent attention,” a student leader said.

As of the time of filing this report, the management of Olabisi Onabanjo University had not issued an official statement. The Ogun State Police Command also had not released details about arrests or investigations.

Students are demanding increased security patrols around private hostels. They also want stronger collaboration between the university, local authorities, and law enforcement agencies.

This latest incident highlights the security challenges facing students in many Nigerian tertiary institutions. Off-campus accommodation often lacks adequate protection, leaving students vulnerable to criminal attacks.

For now, fear remains high in the OOU community. Many students are hoping swift action will prevent another attack.
