VDM confronts soldiers and police — Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VDM (VeryDarkMan), sparked fresh debate after confronting security operatives stationed around the Ministry of Defence and delivering a message many Nigerians have described as bold and controversial.

Standing directly in front of soldiers and police officers, VDM challenged them to reflect on their roles within a system he believes has failed both citizens and security personnel alike.

“After 35 years of service, there will be nothing to show for it. You have a government that you cannot use to protect your own family, but you are using it to protect this terrible government. They travel by flight, but you travel by road because you cannot afford it.”

Unlike many criticisms directed at government institutions, VDM did not address politicians or public office holders. Instead, he spoke directly to the men and women in uniform, arguing that they, too, suffer the consequences of poor governance.

According to him, the real challenge facing Nigeria is not the soldiers, police officers, or other security personnel carrying out their duties. Rather, he believes the problem lies within a system that places weapons in their hands and often positions them against the very people they are meant to protect.

“The real problem is not the men in uniform. It’s the system that puts guns in their hands and turns them against their own people.”

Furthermore, VDM urged security officers to think beyond their current positions and consider what life could look like after retirement.

He warned that one day the uniforms would come off, salaries would stop, and many officers would return to communities facing the same economic hardship, insecurity, and social challenges affecting ordinary Nigerians.

“To the men in uniform, there is still time to wake up. Because one day the uniform will be gone, the salary will stop, and you will return to your villages to face the same poverty, the same bandits, and the same insecurity you were used to shield others from.

That day, you will remember this moment and ask why you didn’t do the right thing while you had the chance.”

The remarks have generated mixed reactions across social media platforms. While some Nigerians praised VDM for speaking openly about the welfare of security personnel, others argued that his comments oversimplified the complex challenges facing the country’s armed forces and law enforcement agencies.

Nevertheless, the statement has reignited conversations about the welfare of serving and retired security officers, the state of governance, and the growing frustrations among citizens over insecurity and economic hardship.

As discussions continue online, many observers believe VDM’s message resonates because it highlights a reality often overlooked: those tasked with protecting the nation also face many of the same struggles confronting ordinary Nigerians.
