Senate disowns Mele Kyari arrest warrant — The Nigerian Senate has distanced itself from reports claiming that it issued an arrest warrant against former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.
The clarification came during proceedings at the Senate following widespread reactions to comments made during the Public Accounts Committee hearing on the alleged financial irregularities involving the state-owned oil company.
In addition, the Senate also rebuked Senator Adams Oshiomhole over his description of the NNPCL as a “bunch of criminals and thieves” during the committee session.
However, Senator Oshiomhole stood firmly by his position and refused to withdraw the remarks when challenged.
“My comments were made out of frustration over the refusal of Mele Kyari to honour invitations extended to him by the committee,” Oshiomhole said.
According to the former Edo State governor, Kyari allegedly failed to appear before the committee despite being invited on nine separate occasions.
Consequently, Oshiomhole argued that such actions undermined the Senate’s oversight responsibilities and raised concerns about accountability within the oil sector.
“I maintain my call for a thorough investigation of Mele Kyari. Public officials must answer questions when invited by constituted authorities,” he stated.
Furthermore, Oshiomhole clarified that his use of the word “thieves” was prompted by what he described as repeated disregard for the committee’s invitations.
The development follows growing public interest in ongoing legislative scrutiny of the NNPCL’s operations and financial records. Lawmakers have continued to examine audit reports and other documents relating to the management of public funds within the petroleum sector.
Meanwhile, Senate leadership emphasized that any decision regarding warrants or sanctions must follow established parliamentary procedures and receive the necessary approvals.
The Senate’s position effectively dismisses reports suggesting that it had formally ordered the arrest of Mele Kyari.
As discussions continue, attention remains focused on calls for transparency, accountability, and full cooperation with legislative investigations involving the nation’s oil industry.
