Mene Ogidi killing – The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and other officers involved in the extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision follows the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings into the fatal shooting, which occurred on April 26, 2026, and sparked nationwide outrage after a disturbing video of the incident went viral on social media.
“No uniform is a license to kill,” the Inspector-General of Police declared while addressing journalists at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
Disu described the conduct of the officers as criminal, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable, stressing that such actions have no place in the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the police hierarchy, the Force Disciplinary Committee found that ASP Nuhu Usman acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.
The committee subsequently recommended the immediate dismissal of Usman and other officers found culpable in the killing. The recommendations have now been approved by the IGP and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final ratification.
Upon completion of the administrative process, the affected officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the unlawful homicide.
Mene Ogidi killing: IGP Vows Justice for Mene Ogidi
Disu assured Nigerians that justice would be served transparently and decisively, adding that the police would not shield any officer found guilty of misconduct.
“This action was criminal, it was unprofessional, and it has no place in the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
“The era of impunity is over. Every officer, regardless of rank or uniform, is accountable under the law.”
The IGP also extended his condolences to the family, friends, and community of the late Mene Ogidi, promising that the case would be pursued to its logical conclusion.
“Justice will not only be done, but it will also be seen to be done,” Disu assured.
Mene Ogidi killing: How the Incident Happened
Mene Ogidi was reportedly shot dead in Effurun, Delta State, while in police custody. A viral video showed the victim seated on the ground with his hands restrained behind his back moments before he was fatally shot at close range.
The graphic footage triggered widespread condemnation from Nigerians, civil society groups, and human rights advocates, who demanded swift justice and accountability.
Following public outrage, the IGP ordered the immediate transfer of all officers involved from the Delta State Command to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action.
Police Reaffirm Zero Tolerance for Extrajudicial Killings
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the rule of law.
Disu emphasized that the actions of the indicted officers were personal violations and do not reflect the values or standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
“We have zero tolerance for lawlessness within our ranks. No officer has the right to take a life outside the provisions of the law,” he said.
He also appealed to residents of Delta State and Nigerians at large to remain calm and allow the judicial process to take its course.
The killing of Mene Ogidi has once again reignited concerns about police brutality and the urgent need for sustained reforms within Nigeria’s law enforcement system.
